Group A: State of play (What are Bafana’s Chances)
Uruguay and Mexico are in pole position to qualify from Group A going into the last round of matches. FIFA.com looks at the possible permutations.
Held to a goalless draw by Uruguay and put to the sword by Mexico, Group A favourites France need something of a miracle to advance. Unbeaten after their first two games, the Mexicans and Uruguayans will face off on Tuesday requiring only a point apiece to reach the Round of 16. Hosts South Africa, meanwhile, find themselves in an even more invidious position than Les Bleus.

1. Uruguay: 4 pts; GD +3; three goals scored
2. Mexico: 4 pts; GD +2; three goals scored
3. France: 1 pt; GD -2; no goals scored
4. South Africa: 1 pt; GD -3; one goal scored

Qualifying criteria
According the Regulations of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, the ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.
Permutations
– If Uruguay and Mexico draw, Uruguay finish top and Mexico second.
– If South Africa beat France and Uruguay beat Mexico, Uruguay finish top and Mexico or South Africa second.*
– If South Africa beat France and Mexico beat Uruguay, Mexico finish top and Uruguay or South Africa second.*
– If France beat South Africa and Mexico beat Uruguay, Mexico finish top and Uruguay or France second.*
– If France beat South Africa and Uruguay beat Mexico, Uruguay finish top and Mexico or France second.*
*Second place will be determined by overall goal difference. France’s goal difference is currently five goals worse than Uruguay’s and four worse than Mexico’s, while South Africa are one goal worse off than the French.
