“Ngcobo 2010”, the ultimate South African football fan, is the lucky winner of MTN’s Last Fan Standing competition.
His prize included tickets to watch all 38 matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ South Africa and at the same time he will attempt to break the Guinness World Records™ for the most matches attended by an individual at a single football FIFA World Cup™.
The current record stands at 20 games, but MTN’s Last Fan Standing winner is attempting to take this a step further by attending all 38 matches.
That means: 38 World Cup games, 10 stadiums, 9 cities , over 17,000km’s of travel and over 3,400 minutes of live FIFA World Cup™ football action.
An incredible feat. In order to meet this challenge Ngcobo will have to follow the following Guinness World Records™ criteria and guidelines:
- This record is based on the number of complete games attended at a single FIFA World Cup™ finals tournament.
- For the purposes of this record only matches during the finals tournament will count towards the final total. Qualifying matches will not be included.
- This record is to be attempted by an individual.
- This record is measured by the number of complete games watched.
- A match will only count if the contestant watches the whole match. This means they must be in their seat before the kick off (signalled by the referee’s whistle) and must remain in their seat until the end of the match (the final whistle or the final penalty of a penalty shoot out).
- The contestant may only leave their seat during a scheduled break (i.e. half time).
- If the contestant leaves at any other time during the match that game will not count towards the final total.
- If the match is abandoned and there is no final result, that game will not count towards the final total.
- There is no restrictions on the transport methods to get from game to game (public or private is acceptable) but the attempt will be invalidated if any traffic laws are violated.
“Thulani will be the envy of every football fan this summer as he attempts his record-breaking trip. But it’s not just a jolly, it’s a logistical headache, he’s going to have to pull out all the stops if he’s to make it into the record books. Good luck, Thulani!” – Craig Glenday, Editor in Chief – Guinness World Records
