Google adds Linux support to voice and video chat

Google has announced that it has officially added Linux support to its online voice and video chat service. Originally introduced in November of 2008, Google voice and video chat uses a free downloadable plug-in and various Internet standards, including XMPP, RTP, and H.264. The service allows users to initiate a video chat with high-quality audio directly from within Gmail, iGoogle and the company's Orkut social networking site – one of the most visited sites from Brazil and India.

According to a post on the Official Gmail Blog by Google Software Engineer Tristan Schmelcher, support for Linux was the developers "top video chat request". Voice and video chat for Linux currently supports Ubuntu and other Debian-based distributions. Reportedly, RPM support is coming soon.

Linux users can download the plug-in from gmail.com/videochat.
